About me
BasicsI'm Laurence, a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in Canada, in the province of Quebec. Like most people in this part of the country, French is my mother tongue. I love to talk to people from around the world and learn about different cultures. That's why I chose to use English on this site, since it's a language that is understood by a majority of visitors. If I had to describe myself in a couple of words only, I'd say perfectionist, creative and hard-working.
Passions and hobbies
I love everything related to computer science and art! My passion is web-designing, although I also like traditional art, like drawing and creating stuff. I also love reading, especially fantasy novels. I've been playing guitar for nine years now, but I stopped my lessons a year ago, because I hadn't enough time to practice. I did a lot of concerts, but what I prefer is playing for fun, just for myself. I especially love playing Dust in the Wind by Kansas, it's such a beautiful song! After playing classical guitar for so long, I thought it was time to unleash my inner rock star with an electric guitar. Ah, Guitar Hero can make you dream...
Music
On my iPod, you'll find a little bit of everything, from Madonna to Lynyrd Skynyrd. If I had to pick my favorite artist, it would definitely be Madonna, whom I really admire for always reinventing herself after all those years. I've seen her twice in concerts and she was amazing! I truly love music and I'm grateful that I had the chance to see these other fabulous artists in concert: Britney Spears (with The Pussycat Dolls), Celine Dion, Beyonce, Avril Lavigne and Black Eyed Peas (with Rihanna). In the future, I'd really like to see Lady Gaga in concert, when she'll have more material. I love her! She's not afraid of being different and trying new things. Maybe she's the next Madonna?
Movies and TV
I rarely go to the movie theater... maybe less than five times per year! I prefer to watch some old horror or suspense movies at home. Those are way better than the new ones, in my opinion! Misery, The Exorcist and Jaws are among my all-time favorite. There can be blood or human torture, but I can't stand evil puppets or dolls like Chucky! Weird, eh? On TV, the shows I prefer are One Tree Hill, The O.C. and Gossip Girl. Yes, drama, drama, drama! I also enjoy watching C.S.I. and Mindfreak, since I'm a very logical person and I love to solve problems.
Sports
I'm not a huge fan of sports. Most likely because I'm not talented at all. Some people have it, some people don't. I'd place myself in the second category. Of course, I love to do certain sports just for fun! Swimming, basket-ball, badminton and frisbee, for example. I also love Dance Dance Revolution, even though it's not exactly a sport. I'm a huge fan of hockey! The Montreal Canadiens is my favorite team and I hope that one day I'll see them bringing home the Stanley Cup. Last time was in 1993, but I'm still hoping! Go Habs Go!
School
Since I live in the province of Quebec, in Canada, the school system is a little bit different. Basically, you have elementary school (kinder garden to 6th grade), then you have high school (sec.1 to sec.5). You can go on the job market after sec.5, but there won't be a lot of careers available for you. That's why most people go to cegep for two to three years, depending on their program. I'm currently in cegep studying computer science and maths. In two years, I want to study software engineering at university.
Health
Talking about myself without mentionning my scoliosis would be like skipping a part of my life... A couple of years ago, I learned that I had a scoliosis, which is when your spine is curved like an S. I had to wear an orthopedic corset for one year, but it didn't work. I also did physiotherapy and it helped a little bit, but not enough. It got around 70 degrees and it hurted a lot... My self-esteem wasn't very high at that time, because seeing your own body deform itself is difficult. However, I had a surgery last year. It was a hard time, but my family and my friends were very supportive. I'm very happy of the result! It was a hard challenge, but I got through it and I now see it as a part of my life.
I think that's it... If you want to learn more about me, just ask!
